Typical traumatic events include motor vehicle accidents (MVA), workplace accidents, sexual abuse and rape, criminal victimization, childhood abuse of many forms, sudden loss, torture, and war.
Motor Vehicle Accidents (MVA)
Many victims of automobile accidents find it challenging to control their thoughts, mood, and behavior after a car accident. They may notice that they feel depressed, nervous, fearful, or numb to the surroundings. A lot of victims experience memory and attention problems, or feel mentally preoccupied. Some prefer to withdraw from other people and stop doing activities that they used to enjoy.
Many accident victims experience flashbacks and disturbing images of the accident in different circumstances, have nightmares and hence trouble sleeping. Some find themselves angry all the time and find relief in alcohol or other temporary fixes as a way of coping.
Victims of accidents usually receive treatment for their physical injuries but they do not know that they are eligible to receive therapy for the psychological impact caused by the accident as well, free of charge to them. If untreated, the trauma and other psychological issues from the accident could affect your future mental health and well-being. There is no referral needed for a psychological assessment. Please call our office to book an appointment with our experienced psychologist today.
What is Vision Therapy?
We at Pleasantview Family Health Centre have a multidisciplinary approach to rehabilitation and work together to improve your mind, body, and vision, simultaneously. Vision therapy and rehabilitation (VTR) is a form of neurological training that retrains the brain and the eyes for better and more effective performance.
Neural plasticity is the neural network’s ability to regenerate new cells, new connections, and new behaviours. More recent research has shown that neural plasticity is present at all ages, not just children; therefore VTR can help improve vision for patients of any age.
Whether it is a child with lazy eye (amblyopia) or an adult experiencing eye strain when reading, we can perform a comprehensive assessment of eye muscle movements and vision to create a tailored treatment plan of eye exercises for the individual’s needs. We use a variety of optical devices and tools such as therapeutic lenses, prisms and filters for treatments and exercises. Although, vision therapy can be a very effective way of improving your visual comfort, it requires your commitment for a successful outcome.
A vast number of vision issues can be improved by vision therapy including:
Following a moving target
Performance of both eyes together
Focusing on objects up-close
Lazy eye (amblyopia)
Crossed eyes (Strabismus)
Other subtle eye alignment problems that can cause eye fatigue while reading
Eye movement disorders
Vision issues associated with developmental disabilities
Vision problems resultant from brain injury
A car accident or stroke or other traumatic event can cause concussion or other brain injury that can be very difficult to cope with physically and emotionally. If you have suffered a traumatic event and are experiencing headaches, eye fatigue, glare sensitivity, double vision, or notice any other differences in your vision, we can assess you and help you return to your optimal visual performance. If you were involved in a car accident, your car insurance will cover the treatment costs.
Vision Therapy and Learning Disabilities
Convergence insufficiency is a condition in which one eye does not turn inward when looking at near objects and turns outward instead. It is the leading cause of blurred vision, double vision and eye strain. The symptoms of convergence insufficiency correlate with learning-related problems like ADHD and dyslexia. Research suggests that vision therapy is the ideal therapy for overcoming these problems.
With the individualized treatment plans we offer, your eyes are taught to work more efficiently together as a team, and therefore improving your visual-motor and perceptual-cognitive performance. We include enjoyable activities and exercises that enhance your visual alignment, movements, and processing.
